On Saturday, February 1st, the Rotary Club of Chester–Long Valley conducted a food drive in front of the Chester ShopRite, with permission from the management, in order to collect food and other needed items to benefit the patrons of both the Washington Township and Chester Food Pantries. The food drive was conducted from 9am until 1pm. The day was dry but chilly, nothing like the frigid weather that was encountered when collecting food last year.

This particular day and weekend was chosen, as it was Superbowl weekend. People were in a festive mood acquiring food and other goodies to celebrate the upcoming game.

As always, people were very generous and anxious to give in order to help others in need. We stuffed two full-sized SUVs with food and other items needed to supply the food pantries. The Rotarians working the food drive estimate that the total donations were in excess of 600 pounds.

As donors dropped off their contributions to help out, the Rotarians were thanked and blessed for taking time out of their schedules to think of others who are not as fortunate. The Rotarians were also thanked for handing out a list of items that were needed in the pantries. As one donor put it, “I never know what is needed. The list enabled me to give something that people need.”

The membership of the Rotary Club of Chester-Long Valley would like to take this opportunity to thank the management of ShopRite, as well as all those who donated items, making the food drive a great success. If you did not have the opportunity to donate this year, we will be back again next year. In the meantime, anyone wishing to donate items or money to either food pantry at other times during the year can get in touch with the Washington Township or Chester Food Pantries directly.

If you would like to be part of an organization whose purpose is to help out in our communities, call either Bill McGuire at (908) 876-3584 or Suzanne Aitken at (908) 705-7968. The Rotary Club of Chester-Long Valley meets every Monday night at 6:45pm at the Lamplighter restaurant in Chester.

Again, thank you very much for your generosity.
